Regroup!

Been a while since we posted. Lots of updates, mostly from the last few days.

First, our trailer came in yesterday! Here it is, taking up most of our driveway:

Then we went window shopping, and learned that the windows we wanted are going to total thousands. But we remembered some old windows we found on the street a while ago and picked up...

So now we're re-drawing plans to fit these in!

  1. Yeah! This is so exciting!! :D Keep it up and don't burn out! Soon enough we'll be havin' construction parties!

  2. Looks like a neat project! I'm curious how you plan to offset your losses in thermal efficiency when switching from modern to salvaged windows, however.

    1. Indeed, Trevor! I'm renovating the heck out of the windows, first off. Currently doing just one of them, start-to-finish, to see how it works out. I'll be installing the old windows as awning-style, with plenty of lovely weatherstripping, and in the winter, odds are good that we'll be putting up window plastic. I might also try my hand at building storm windows.

That said, as I research restoring windows, I'm discovering that a well-restored window with storms is equivalently efficient to a new low-e window.

It's just that we started wondering how many years of lowered energy costs it would take to pay off the thousands of dollars difference between the old windows and the new ones... plus the character and happy recycliness of the old ones.

(PS, this is Lori writing, not Jon, whose ID I'm logged in under. :P )
